January 2025 Market Commentary: Will We See a Threepeat in 2025?

Jan 7, 2025 | Market Commentary

As the year ends, investors reflect on past performance and plan for the future. In 2024, the standout winners were the “Mag 7” stocks and AI-related companies. Non-tech sectors, however, struggled, with only four of the S&P 500’s 11 sectors outperforming its impressive 24.01% gain: Telecom (40.05%), Information Technology (37.23%), Consumer Discretionary (30.98%), and Financials (28.80%). Materials fared the worst, down 1.62%, while Health Care, Real Estate, and Energy posted gains under 2%.

With both U.S. and most global equity markets up substantially in 2024, following on the heels of a strong 2023, the key question investors face going into 2025 is “can it happen again?” To some degree logic dictates that after a 54% rise in the S&P 500 in the past two years, some sort of pull-back or a flat year is overdue, especially when market valuations are considered.

Not necessarily so!
